 Principal's Message

Dedicated Teachers and Diligent Students Contribute to a Blooming Yield

At Ming-Der Chinese School, the bonds within our school community are much like those within a family. Throughout the year, the students of Ming-Der Chinese School, not to mention our outstanding teachers and supportive parents, have been consistently working towards the academic excellence of our children. As a result of these brilliant efforts, Ming-Der Chinese School has, once again, achieved a positive overall outcome for 2009 and I am extremely proud of the efforts of our teachers, parents and of course, our students.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate each and every one of our students who received the Minster's Award for Excellence in Community Languages. This year, we had five nominees, with one student receiving the prestigious Minster's Award, two recipients of the Highly Commended Award and two recipients of the Commended Award. Such terrific results are a reflection of the distinction achieved by our students and teachers as well as the dedication of the parents within our school community.

In May this year, some of Ming-Der Chinese School's most elite performers took part in the Annual National Poetry Eisteddfod. There are no words to describe my pride towards our outstanding students and the hard work of their teachers who worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless performance. This was reflected in the exceptional results, with nine of the twelve groups participating receiving an award and nine individual performers receiving medals. Once again, we have sewn our name into the National Poetry Eisteddfod history as the highest achieving school. Thus, it is my strong opinion, that anybody who speaks of Ming-Der Chinese School can associate our reputation and honour with a school which consistently strives for, and attains, strong results.

Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend The Sixth International Conference on Internet Chinese Education (ICIC 2009) in Taiwan. From this experience, I gained invaluable knowledge of the advancing technologies which will enable the teachers at Ming-Der Chinese School to further enhance our students' learning experiences. Upon my return, I made the decision to promote this E-Learning Experience to not only our students but also to the online community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedication of the head teacher at each of our six branches who has put in a lot of effort to ensure that this information is efficiently and effectively transmitted to our students. For this, I'm sure that all of our teachers are very thankful for Ms. Francesca Teng who trained all of our teachers to become knowledgeable of E-Learning programs, such as blogging.

The main theme at the 2009 teachers' development meeting was quality teaching. It is important for teachers to effectively and efficiently revise key points to ensure that students continue to enjoy learning the Chinese language. I have asked the teachers to embrace and achieve these goals through speaking, listening, reading and writing tasks, in compliance with the Board of Studies Chinese Syllabus. This balance between our teachers' quality teaching and the students' motivation and ability to absorb information and knowledge has contributed to such a positive outcome for Ming-Der Chinese School over the years.

The famous sculpture artist "Chu Ming," is famous for his ability to incorporate the principles of Tai Chi into his art as he balances each movement with reaction. Thus, with each stroke, Chu Ming must consciously apply the accurate amount of depth and strength to produce a brilliant piece of art. This, I believe, is a reflection of my perception of "quality teaching," as preparation, delivery and students' learning are equally important and must balance out to contribute to the most desirable result.

About Us

The phrase Ming-Der originates from "the Great Learning"; first book of the famous collection of the four books, written by Confucious.

Ming-Der means to illustrate morality and virtue, to know of right and wrong. Its meaning is significant to our students, as we promote not only high standards of academic education, but an all round sense of greater learning.

Ming-Der Chinese School is registered as a charitable, non-profit Chinese community language school. The school operates in six separate locations around the Western Sydney, with more than 798 students in a total of 52 classes from Kindergarten to Year Twelve.

This school is one of the largest Chinese schools in Sydney. It has a firm reputation for teaching the Chinese language and in promoting the Chinese culture and traditions.

Our Aims

  • To teach the morals and principles of traditional Chinese culture found in ancient and contemporary Chinese literature.
  • To promote the dissemination of Chinese culture into modern Australian society.
  • To maintain an awareness among Australian-born Chinese of their cultural heritage through the teaching of the Chinese language and culture.

Our teachers are all qualified teachers of Mandarin. Their qualifications have been approved by the NSW Department of Education.

Our curriculum consists of teaching traditional Chinese characters. Beginners will use texts from Taiwan as well as resources compiled by our own teachers. Primary school students learn to write basic compositions. They will learn to use the Chinese dictionary. In order to adhere to the NSW Board of Studies curriculum, students will learn Hanyu Ping Yin from grade three and are introduced to simplified characters. In high school, students will further develop their conversational and dialogue skills. They learn Chinese expressions and further develop their essay writing skills.
